Torrance, Feb. 25, 2008 - The Center for Global Understanding (CFGU) and Lilly Fellows Program National Research Conference along with AJC announces co-sponsorship of the Convivencia, to be held at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles CA, on March 27-29th 2008. From the "old world" of medieval Spain when Christians, Muslims and Jews lived in mutual tolerance and relative peace comes the concept of "Convivencia", or shared existence. Our "new world" seems to be defined by tensions between religion and secularism, and is scarred by religious and ethnic violence. Globalization co-exists with fragmentation, and fundamentalism with hybridity. CFGU is a national non-profit, non-advocacy resource based organization, founded by business entrepreneur Munir Moon, which seeks to develop a better understanding among people of various faiths and cultural backgrounds with an emphasis on Islam and Muslims. One of the main programs is an American Muslim Students’ outreach program on civic engagement. Founded in 1911, Loyola Marymount University is rooted in the Jesuit and Marymount traditions. Its enrollment of 9,000 includes 5,746 undergraduates, 1,899 graduates and 1,327 law school students. # # # Websites for CFGU is www.cfgu.us and LMU is www.lmu.edu |
